MacBook Flexgate Repair Prices

If your MacBook screen turns black when opened past a certain angle, or you see stage light patterns glowing across the bottom edge of the screen, there is a strong chance you are experiencing Flexgate. This issue was most common on MacBook Pro models from 2016 to 2018, where the original backlight cable was manufactured a few millimetres too short. Over time, the cable frays or tears, cutting off the backlight when the lid is opened normally.

At iCorrect, we repair Flexgate by replacing and lengthening the backlight flex cable itself. This repair is carried out under a microscope by our microelectronics team, and avoids the need to replace the entire screen assembly. Our method is sustainable, cost-effective, and fully covered under a two-year warranty.

MacBook Model Number

Need help identifying your MacBook?

Check the model number printed on the underside of your MacBook. It starts with the letter “A” followed by four digits. Use this number to quickly identify your exact model and ensure you select the correct repair or service.

Our Process

Flexgate was originally a design flaw that Apple failed to acknowledge until widespread complaints forced them to launch a limited repair programme. But even now, many users are turned away due to expired coverage or model exclusions. Apple’s free replacement only covered the 13-inch models for up to six years from purchase and did not include the 15-inch versions (crazy we know).

Our repair is precise. We open your screen assembly, extend the original cable, and reinforce the weak point that caused the problem in the first place. There is no need to replace the entire screen. And if your camera has stopped working too, it’s the same fault with that cable and can be repaired too. Every repair is tested and documented before it is returned to you, and we stand behind our quality of repair with our two-year warranty.

FAQs

What is Flexgate on a MacBook Pro?

Flexgate refers to a design fault on 2016 to 2018 MacBook Pros where the screen’s backlight flex cable was made too short. With repeated opening and closing of the lid, the cable slowly tears or frays. Eventually, this stops the backlight from working, making the screen appear dead even though the display itself is still active.

Apple did not initially acknowledge the issue, but later created a limited repair programme that only covered some models. At iCorrect, we repair the actual cable itself, rather than replacing the entire display. It is more sustainable and significantly more cost-effective.

How do I know if my MacBook has Flexgate?

The most common signs of Flexgate include your screen turning black when the lid is opened, working only at certain angles, or showing a stage light glow at the bottom edge of the display.

If you see pink or grey bars, this could be a different fault called Dustgate, which we also repair. If your MacBook is a 2016, 2017, or 2018 MacBook Pro (A1706, A1707, or A1708), and you are experiencing these symptoms, there is a strong chance it is Flexgate.

Can Flexgate be repaired or does the whole screen need replacing?

We repair Flexgate by lengthening and replacing the backlight flex cable. Our technicians carry this out under a microscope, reinforcing the flex and protecting it against further damage. We do not replace the entire screen unless there is additional damage.

This is a proper repair to the original Apple display. It is more sustainable, retains the value of your MacBook, and is backed by a two-year warranty.

How much does it cost to repair Flexgate on a MacBook?

Flexgate repairs at iCorrect start from £159. This includes disassembly, flex cable replacement, testing, reassembly, and warranty.

Every repair is completed in-house by a qualified technician and returned fully functional with no signs of fault.

Does Apple still offer free Flexgate repairs?

Apple offered free Flexgate repairs for affected 13-inch MacBook Pros within six years of purchase. This programme did not cover the 15-inch models and is no longer active for most devices.

It is always worth contacting Apple first to confirm if your device is still eligible. But if they decline your request, we offer a proper alternative that restores your original screen.

Can I fix Flexgate myself by adjusting the screen angle or cable?

You might find DIY suggestions online that involve propping up the lid at certain angles or installing cable extenders from eBay. We do not recommend these. They are short-term at best, and can often make the damage worse.

The only proper fix is to replace and reinforce the flex cable itself. This must be done under a microscope with proper soldering tools and testing procedures. Anything less is a temporary patch that will fail again.

Can Flexgate damage get worse over time?

Yes. Flexgate does not stay the same. As the cable continues to fray, the backlight function will continue to degrade. Eventually, the screen may stop working entirely. In some cases, the fault can even affect the camera or display circuitry.

We always recommend repairing Flexgate early. It protects your MacBook, retains its value, and prevents further damage.

How long does a Flexgate repair take?

Most Flexgate repairs are completed within two to three working days. This includes disassembly, cable replacement, full testing, and reassembly.

If you need the device returned faster, we offer an express service depending on technician availability. Every repair is returned fully tested with a two-year warranty.

My camera has also stopped working. Is this related to Flexgate?

Yes, it could be. The camera uses a flex cable that runs alongside the backlight cable, and both can be affected by the same strain and movement.

We check both flex cables during every Flexgate repair. If the camera cable is damaged, we can repair it at the same time. This avoids unnecessary repeat visits and keeps your MacBook fully functional.

Is Flexgate repair covered under warranty if it happens again?

Yes. All Flexgate repairs come with our standard two-year warranty. If the same fault reappears within that period, we will repair it again at no cost.

We also inspect and clean nearby cables, such as the ones affected by Dustgate, to ensure you do not run into related faults later on. If we do find any other issues, we will notify you during the repair. Your repair is built to last and backed by a company that stands behind its work.
